On many of my tours the final day is a trek to the airport but this was different: two visits and a light lunch! Pares Balta was our first visit and owner Joan Cusiné greeted us before the team took us on an exciting mountain vineyard safari as we headed up into the hills in a variety of vehicles to see the extreme viticulture. It was stunningly beautiful. We also viewed an historic kiln in the woods that was created by Iberian tribes and terraced vineyards originally built by the Romans. Cracking open some bottles of Cava with a sabre at the top of the hill was great fun.

Into the Cava cellar and then up for a tasting and a snack lunch. This was a great visit hosted by four delightful young people who were clearly passionate about what they do.

From Pares Balta, we edged closer to Barcelona but stopped at another amazing property – Can Rafols. The place oozes history and the whole estate has been extensively renovated with an extraordinary winery carved into the rock. Alec hosted our visit with great enthusiasm as he showed us round the old house and winery. A terrific tasting ensued from their top class Gran Caus range, a sneaky 100% Sumol and finishing with the amazing Can Llubis 2004 – Merlot Cabernet Franc blend.

A busy tour but it really gave a wonderful insight into the amazing people, geography and wines of Catalonia.
