Our final full day took us to the PDO Mantinia region near the town of Tripolis. Moschofilero is the principal grape here, and as we have already discovered at Semeli, it is a top class variety.
At Kalogris organic winery we were about to discover an extensive repertoire of styles ranging from bone dry to medium sweet.
We met Evangelos and Sandy directly at their vineyard and were greeted with a welcome shot of Tsipouro – Greek grappa. With classical music being piped through to the vines, we took a walk around the estate to get a great insight into their philosophy.
From the vineyard, it was a short drive to the family house where we toured the cellar and met the rest of the family.
There is a wonderful happy ambience about the Kalogris family – they are passionate about what they do, take huge pleasure in telling their story and produce a wonderfully diverse and eclectic selection of wines.
A truly wonderful start to our day.
From Kalogris we headed back to Nemea for our final visit of the tour to the Gofas Estate. Gofas is a really high quality winery that exports around 60% of its production. Betty was out host and she is an outstanding ambassador for the winery and Greek wines and was extremely informative about the area. We tasted the wines, seated at an amazing table by the stream that runs through the estate. A beautiful, serene location that enhanced the whole tasting occasion.
Our final night dinner was a very buoyant occasion, held at 3Sixty restaurant in the heart of the old town of Nafplio.
As ever, the portions were generous as we reminisced about the tour and agreed that Greek wines have so much to offer.
