Outline Itinerary
Day 1
Our tour commences at our meeting point at Naples airport (see Flight Transfers below). We will board our coach and head to Avellino, where we will settle in to our hotel and enjoy a first night dinner together in town.

Day 2
We explore the key white wine DOCGs of Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo with visits to wineries in the hills surrounding Avellino. Among beautiful scenery we will enjoy the aromatic and structured wines made from Fiano and Greco grapes (and others!), and learn more about their history and their growing reputation.
We will visit at least two wineries and take lunch, either at one of the wineries or in a local restaurant, a chance to match local food with the wines we have been discovering.

Day 3
A day nearer the coast, visiting DOCs such as Falerno del Massico, Campi Flegrei and Vesuvio, where historic wines such as Falerno and Lacryma di Christi are made. This is an opportunity to delve deeper into the history of Campania winemaking, and to explore some of its very special indigenous grape varieties.
During our two visits with tastings, and lunch will provide us with the opportunity to enjoy some different scenery, but still allow us to return to Avellino to enjoy its delights at leisure.

Day 4
Aglianico is the key red grape variety of Campania (and neighbouring Basilicata),produces beautiful wines with great aromatic complexity, and tannins which soften beautifully to produce sophisticated, elegant wines.
Our visits and lunch will take us to Irpinia, home of Taurasi and to Sannio, home of Aglianico del Taburno.

Day 5
The tour ends today, and our coach will take us to our Departure Point, Naples Airport. We may find time to add a bonus visit and tasting en route to Naples, the specific itinerary will be advised nearer to the tour.

Note: the Itinerary may be changed at Tim Syrad Wine Tours discretion so as to facilitate the smooth running of the tour and to accommodate great opportunities for visits or tastings that may become available.

More about my Wine Tour to Campania
Campania is relatively unknown wine region of Italy, though its touristic fame is virtually unsurpassed: Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento…. the list goes on.
My wine tour will reveal the variety and quality of its wines, grown amid a wonderous landscape.
Vineyards occupy all parts of Campania, with denominations in the islands of Capri and Ischia, coastal regions such as Cilento, Amalfi and Sorrento, volcanic slopes of Vesuvius and the rugged mountains of the Appenines. Soil types vary, but in many areas the impact of Vesuvius is felt, even when it is distant – volcanic ash has blown across the landscape for centuries, lending a unique quality to many of its soils.
Our visits will ensure we cover the most famous wine denominations, but also lesser known areas that help to build our picture of the wonderful variety of grapes and wine styles Campania has to offer.

One of Italian winemaking’s particular charms is the multiplicity of wine varieties unique to specific regions, that are key to the denominations of those regions. In Campania Fiano, Greco and Aglianico might ‘top the charts’ for the wines most likely to be encountered in shops and restaurants in the UK, other varieties have much to offer.
Greco is a fussy grape, prone to fungal diseases and low yielding. But it likes heat, and doesn’t mind some drought, so it thrives in the warmth of limestone based soils high in the Appenines, where cool nights slow its ripening and enable it to develop superb complexity. Fiano is a variety rescued by the pioneering Mastroberardino family, who focussed on making top quality wines from local varieties. Now grown more widely than Greco it is respected for its deeply coloured powerful wines with beautiful texture. Aglianico possibly came to Italy millenia ago from Greece. It has been compared to Piemonte’s Nebbiolo – with the Campanian vineyards contrasting with neighbouring Basilicata’s in the same way as Barolo and Barbaresco express different characters but superb quality.
Falanghina, thought to descend from the grapes that made the historic Falerno wines of Roman times, is both a ‘workhorse’ and a variety capable of wonderful quality and complexity. It particularly features in the Sannio denomination, and in the ‘flaming fields’ of the Campi Flegrei DOC it produces light, aromatic wines. It is made into dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Piedirosso is the second black grape of the region, grown particularly in coastal areas, and is sometimes used with Aglianico to add softness. Coda di Volpe, named because its bunches resemble a fox’s tail, is included in Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio wines.

A huge variety of wine styles are made. Modern wineries have invested in stainless steel and temperature control, while oak casks and barrels play a key role in the maturation of Riserva red wines. Sparkling wines are made using the traditional method.
Wine makers range from tiny family businesses to large co-ops. Relatives of the Mastroberardino family make wine across the region, Feudi San Gregorio is one of the leading wine companies, and will be included in our itinerary.

In a rugged wooded area sometimes called the Switzerland of the South, Avellino takes its name from Abellenium, Roman ruins a few kilometres away. Subsequently the Lombards, Hapsburgs and Bourbons ruled, and its citizens were key players in the unification of Italy. Its charms include a Romanesque cathedral, restored Medieval customs houses and of course some lovely places to eat.
Naples may be the home of pizza, but Campania has a wide-ranging cuisine, that draws on local ingredients including truffles, mushrooms and cheese such as Caciocavallo di Castelfranco and Pecorino of Fortore. Air-dried Pasta di Gragnano has its own IGP, fillings might be local beef, lamb or pork, or of course vegetables! Desserts we may encounter include Sammnite panzarotti with creamed chestnuts, Annurca appie pies with honey and ricotta cake with Aglianico wine

More about Tim Syrad Wine Tours
Since 1997 I have escorted over 180 groups of people on wine tours, visiting more than 40 wine regions in Europe and the New World. My clients keep coming back year after year because in addition to tastings and visits we really do meet the people who make the wine and tend the vines.
I pride myself in offering tours that are infomative, imaginative and enjoyable. I keep group sizes manageable so that we spend our time appreciating our visits, not getting on and off the bus or queuing for the loos! I personally escort all of my tours, and I ensure as much as possible of the money my clients pay is spent on great food and wine, and good hotels. I believe you can combine appreciating fabulous wine with relaxation and laughter, which is why so many of my clients come on tour with me every year. More than 100 people have come on at least 10 of my tours.
There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on every tour from the start, and I am proud that so many friendships have been made between the people who come on tour with me.
