The final day of our Slovenian Wine Tour

We have been extremely lucky with the weather on this tour and today was no exception.

Fabulous blue skies were with us all day as we headed out towards the Vipava Valley for our final excursion of the trip.

First stop was the wonderful, family owned Lepa Vida estate. Husband and wife team of Marija and Irena run the show with Marija making the wine and Irena running the tastings. Irena was an unstoppable force of nature who conveyed huge amounts of information covering Slovenian history, the significance of the local Zelen and Pinela grapes, the background to the Vipava valley and the influence of Italy on the region. We tasted through nines – their entire range – and not only were all the wines really great examples of their type, Irena had a story about every one of them. It was a wonderfully entertaining final tasting of the tour.

We still had lunch to enjoy and the Michelin starred Zemono restaurant beckoned. A magnificent meal ensued with multiple courses and an array of different wines showcasing a mix of local varieties and top class producers. We sat outside and admired the glorious Vipava Valley with raptors flying majestically in the sky, the sun shining and thinking just how wonderful Slovenia is.

Our tour has ended, but I know we will be back!
