Our Primorska day in Slovenia

Saturday was our Primorska region day which took us in completely the opposite direction to yesterday and led us to the Italian border.

The Brda sub region is one of the most prestigious production zones in all of Slovenia with more stunning scenery and is known as Slovenia’s Tuscany thanks to steep natural amphitheatres of vineyards.

The top class estate of Edi Simčič was our first stop and it was great to meet Alexs Simčič again. Alexs is the second generation (with third generations Jure and Jakob now involved in the business) and he took us for a short walk around the winery and set the scene with the family history, terroir and growth and development of the region. Into the tasting room and Anya hosted a superb array of wines that really showcased the fabulous quality of this domaine.

We contrasted different vintages of Rebula and Sauvignon, tasted unusual blends of local grapes and finished off with Kolos a- a stunning Bordeaux blend red.

From Simčič it was just five minutes to the Klinec Inn. Family owned, I have been coming here for years. More stunning views from their garden and the wines offer another perspective on Slovenia wine production. Klinec are organic, biodynamic and natural. They produce a range of highly distinctive wines – most of them Orange due to extended skin maceration. The food at the restaurant is all locally sourced and very tasty.

It was a very hot afternoon and the never ending delivery of wine and food brought out one or two white flags!
