Our final day in the Douro Valley was greeted with bright sunshine as we packed up and headed into Porto. Our destination was the flagship of the Port industry – Taylors.
Situated in Vila Nova di Gaia, across the river from Porto, this is where most of the Port house have their wine lodges with the proximity to the sea giving the ideal humidity for long term wine ageing.
Taylors has a fabulous position high on the hill with wonderful panoramic views of the river and city.
We took the tour and saw the famous huge barrel that Taylors is famous for and recapped on the details of Port production.
We then transferred into a private room for a tasting of four Ports including their delicious Chip Dry white Port, LBV 2015, 10YO Tawny and Vintage 2009. These Ports confirmed Taylors status as a top class producer.
And yet the day wasn’t over…..a refreshing Portonic – Chip Dry white mixed with tonic water welcomed us outside and then we headed in for lunch in a private room for a delicious three course lunch and of course more Port!
It was great to be back on tour – our first since 2019 and the Douro Valley is a particularly lovely place to be. We enjoyed fabulous hospitality, the warmest of welcomes from the various hosts and an immense amount of delicious food and wine. I am delighted that we will be returning in September 2022 when I will be running three tours.
