I have just returned from a quick recce of the Douro Valley in preparation for our September tours and I am once again staggered by the extraordinary natural beauty of the steep terraced vineyards and the amazing Douro river. Staying in the very pleasant town of Vila Real, we are ideally positioned to explore the wonderful diversity of this famous wine and port producing region. The exciting developments that I have witnessed recently have been the growth of small, boutique producers making really excellent, hand crafted wines, together with a surge in fabulous gastronomic experiences.
Our tours will visit some really exciting and high quality producers including Quinta do Tedo (owned by the Bouchard family in Burgundy), micro estates such as Terrus (who only produce one wine!), the family owned Quinta do Tourais, Quinta do Infantado who make some truly unique Ports and the celebrated Quinta do Portal who we first visited back in 2007. And we round our tour off with lunch at Taylor’s Port Lodge in Porto.
Add in the fact that we will be visiting at harvest time – I am sure this show the Douro Valley at its very best.
