We devoted Thursday to Châteauneuf du Pape and in particular to Domaine Grand Veneur – one of the outposts of the Jaume family and a top class estate in its own right. We were greeted by the wonderful Jules who is at the outset of his winemaking career with a job at Grand Veneur combined with studying at the local wine school.
His passion and humour were infectious as we walked through a Viognier vineyard and talked about the family history, impact of climate change, the famous Galet pudding stones and many of the nuances of the Appellation rules.

Jules was great fun with great knowledge that he imparted with great charm and style. He got the mood spot on – giving us lots of new information that didn’t duplicate what we had heard elsewhere. We toured the winery before heading up their private dining room for lunch.

Nine wines and four courses ensued – a truly sensational line up of wines incorporating three whites and six reds which covered a wide selection of appellations and styles. A salmon creation, lamb and a strawberry dessert rounded the day off.
This was a great day that really allowed us to delve deeply into Châteauneuf du Pape.
