Everyone was ready at 7.15pm to walk to l’Opéra restaurant, a few minutes through bustling Aix. Most of us had flown out on the Heathrow flight and Tim had laid on coaches to take us from Marseille to Aix. The weather is glorious, the scenery spectacular, and as always, many old friendships from previous tours have been rekindled!
Our first night meal was stunning. We had the choice of a cured mackerel tart or a goat’s cheese filled gazpacho jelly for first course, beef cheek canneloni or sea bream on a stunning bed of vegetables, and cheese or an intense chocolate mousse. A red and a white, both Provençal blends (the white was mainly Rolle aka Vermentino, and the red was Grenache Syrah Cinsault) were consumed somewhat lavishly, but we made it back to the hotel and will be heading out in under an hour for our first day’s visits and tastings.
