Sicily tours are looking fabulous

I have just arrived back from a recce to Sicily and am absolutely full of excitement for the three trips we have in April, May and June.

Sicily Wine Tour Hotel Carmine MarsalaAs always, I was bowled over by the Italian hospitality and the warmth of the welcome wherever I went. The wines of Sicily are very much in the ascendant at the moment and winemakers all over the island are fired up with the desire to get their high quality message across.

I stayed in Marsala on the western coast. This pretty town is famous for its fortified wine which is undergoing a renaissance after many years in decline. Marsala is a great base from where we can explore this sector of the island, and we will be staying in the beautiful Hotel Carmine Marsala.

I visited the historic family estate of Curatolo Arini who have been producing Marsala since 1875. Alexandra Curatolo showed me round and we are promised a Marsala Masterclass when we arrive in the spring.

But Sicily is not just about Marsala of course. The island is a huge producer of white and red wines and we will be visiting some of the most influential wineries – and enjoying some wonderful food.

The Planeta estate is very much seen as the new kid on the block and has been very innovative in introducing a multitude of new grape varieties to Sicily. We have an extended visit and lunch in their beautiful converted barn dining room.

Donnafugata is one of the big names and yet they retain a warmth and openness together with making some superb wines. We will be hosted by their winemaker and have an extensive wine and and food pairing session to experience.

We also visit amongst others the tiny Ceuso estate which has a stellar reputation – a traditional Sicilian lunch will be served.

We still have places left on our April 26-30 and June 14-18 tours to Sicily.  I can guarantee a wonderful trip that will open your eyes to the wonderful diversity and beauty of Sicily.
