Our local day started off with a visit to the bank manager! Moreno Peccia owns 2 hectares of vines in the village of Spina – just 30 minutes south of Perugia. Possibly the smallest winery in Umbria, he works in a bank during the week and tends his vines at the weekend. He has Grecchetto, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Merlot and several others planted which makes for an extraordinary mix. Moreno was charming and delightful and we thoroughly enjoyed his eclectic selection of wines with the most divine salumi and pecorino cheese.
Our final visit was to Terre Margaritelli – situated outside of Torgiano. Federico and his American wife Jennifer were our hosts for a truly wonderful lunch and tasting. Jennifer is a top class chef and she served up a scintillatingly delicious selection of local produce which was then accompanied by a selection of
different wines. We revelled in the warm April sunshine, admired the rolling Umbrian hills and wished the moment would last forever.
Back to rea
lity and then we remembered we still had dinner to come…..
And what a dinner! La Taverna is one of the best restaurants in Perugia and we enjoyed a sublime five course extravaganza of goats cheese salad, ravioli, beef, cheeses and a tiramisu.
