Warren Gibson, the chief winemaker at Trinity Hill was our host for this morning’s visit and we headed straight into the vineyards to taste the legendary soil of the hallowed Gimblett Gravels. We got a terrific insight into the nature of this amazing soil and how it contributes to the style of the wines. We tasted a fabulous range of top class wines culminating in their flagship Homage Syrah 2010.
Lunch was taken on the balcony overlooking the region – fabulous rare beef, spicy salmon and dauphinoise potatoes to die for – all washed down with more top class wines.
Craggy Range was our final stop of the day. A truly extraordinary operation set up by Terry Peabody – an Australian businessman and Steve Smith MW – a world class Kiwi viticulturalist. Thy have created a superb brand with super premium wines coming from Hawkes Bay, Martinborough and Marlborough. We tasted through a magnificent range of wines with Jacqui Simiss, their cellar door manager, culminating in their flagship wine Sophia, and took the chance to admire the prolific garden that supplies the restaurant.
