We took a leisurely drive through undulating countryside on our way north of Évora. Headed in the direction of Portalegre and to the historic estate of Reynolds Wine Growers. Their family history dates back to 1820 when Thomas Reynolds left England for Portugal and established a business with his brother Robert trading British and Iberian products between the two countries. The family then founded a cork business with factories in both
Spain and Portugal. The entrepreneurial spirit was clearly deep as Thomas headed to New Zealand with a flock of Merino sheep and never returned, while Robert moved into wines.
The family is now run by 6th generation Julian Reynolds – with 7th generation Carlos waiting in the wings.
We took a lovely walk into the vineyards – the path was lined with roses which created a beautiful picture as we wended our way up the hill.
Back down the hill, we tasted the first three wines from the Carlos Reynolds entry line – all well made: an elegant and rich Tempranillo Rosé, a 50% Arinto 50% Antao Vaz white, and a red blend.
It was now time for lunch and a wonderful traditional Alentejo offering ensued, with Julian Reynolds himself joining us to talk about the wines. Lightly battered vegetables, a rich tomato soup, bacalao and succulent roast lamb from the family farm and two cakes for dessert. We washed this all down with the Julian Reynolds range of reserva white and reds and finished off with a rare bottle of the Gloria Reynolds 2013 and their fortified Touriga Nacional. The bus was quiet on the way home!
