Outline Itinerary

Day 1

A coach will meet the incoming flight from London Gatwick, and take us to our hotel in Porto.

We will have time to settle in and after a welcome drink we will take dinner at either a restaurant in the city or in the hotel.

Day 2

Our first day of the tour will take us north of Porto into the Minho region.

Here we explore the verdancy and spectacular scenery of a region that is home to Vinho Verde, top class Alvarinho and an increasing array of well made wines. This area has transformed itself over the last two decades. We will visit two wineries and have lunch – either at one of the wineries or at a local restaurant.

Dinner at leisure in Porto.

Day 3

The Douro Valley will be our destination this day and depending on train times, we would endeavour to take the train from the famous Sao Bento station in Porto to Pinhão – without doubt one of the great train journeys of the world. You will see the extraordinarily steep slopes of the Douro Valley and observe the stark contrast in terroir and climate. The verdancy of the Minho gives way to a much drier, more unforgiving granite terroir. We will visit two wineries and have lunch.

Dinner at leisure in Porto.

Day 4

Our final full day takes us south to Bairrada and Dão. While these two wine areas have endured variable levels of fortune over the last century, the last two decades have seen a renaissance and some of Portugal’s top wines are emerging from these regions. Bairrada in particular is gaining a reputation for sparkling wines and aromatic whites, while the Dão is producing some very serious reds from Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. We will visit two wineries and have lunch.

Dinner at leisure in Porto.

Day 5

We will check out of our hotel and take the coach to make a final visit to a Port House in Vila Nova de Gaia, where we will have our end of tour lunch.

A short transfer by coach to Porto Airport will give us plenty of time to catch our flight home.

More about my Wine Tour to northern Portugal

Our tour of Portugal will cover the Douro Valley and its key neighbouring wine regions and will enable us to understand the incredible combination of history and geography that has created not just Port but also some of the most exciting red—and white—still wines in the world.

Wines styles and food

Styles of Port vary from the smooth elegance of tawnies to the power and vibrancy of vintage Ports, with whites, pinks and rubies all adding to the stunning variety to be found.  These days as much still wine as fortified is made in the Douro, and we will of course enjoy robust red wines made form local grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), but also amazingly fresh white wines and even sparkling wines made from varieties including Malvasia, Arinto and Viosinho.  The Minho offers Alvarinho (Albariño in Spain), Loureiro and a host of other indigenous grapes, while Dão and Bairrada offer sparkling, textured whites and full bodied reds.

The cuisine of this region has come on leaps and bounds in the last twenty years, and we will experience some exquisite meals as well as more simple fare—but all based on the most delicious fresh local ingredients and prepared with the unforgettable warmth and hospitality of our Portuguese hosts.

The Douro

The famous river (which rises as the Duero in Spain) flows east to west, meeting the Atlantic Ocean at Porto.  We will see the steep sided banks that have been terraced over centuries, allowing grapes to ripen in the intense sunshine, though the rugged terrain has created a multitude of micro-climates that enable all styles of wine to be made.

The river was, of course, a major navigation route, and until dams were erected in the last century the only way to bring wines out was in barrels on the historic rabelos, propelled by sails.  Nowadays transport of wine is more prosaically by lorry, and Port wines can also be matured in the valley, which has encouraged a new generation of innovative winemakers to set up wineries and create new styles, and we will meet some of the best of these.

In the Minho

We will discover a completely different and stunningly beautiful terroir. Proximity to the Atlantic has created a wonderful verdancy and the wines produced are light and fresh. The modern day Vinho Verde is a far cry from the oxidised examples of the 1970’s.

Bairrada and Dão

These regions offer another perspective on the vibrant Portuguese wine scene with wine styles changing as you move further inland. These are two historic wine producing areas that have received a lot of investment over the past 20 years and the results are showing clearly through.

More about Tim Syrad Wine Tours

Since 1997 I have escorted over 150 groups of people on wine tours, visiting more than 40 wine regions in Europe and the New World. My clients keep coming back year after year because in addition to tastings and visits we really do meet the people who make the wine and tend the vines.

I pride myself in offering tours that are informative, imaginative and enjoyable. I keep group sizes manageable so that we spend our time appreciating our visits, not getting on and off the bus or queuing for the loos! I personally escort all of my tours, and I ensure as much as possible of the money my clients pay is spent on great food and wine, and good hotels. I believe you can combine appreciating fabulous wine with relaxation and laughter, which is why so many of my clients come on tour with me every year. More than 100 people have come on at least 10 of my tours.

There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on every tour from the start, and I am proud that many friendships have been made between the people who come on tour with me.

Check out the FAQ page for more specific information about my tours, or contact me directly if you would like to discuss any aspect of my tours.
