We head towards the coast and the Bolgheri DOC. This is where Sassicaia first emerged and started the whole legacy of the SuperTuscan.
The area has expanded rapidly over the past twenty years with many exciting new wineries. Two visits and lunch.

Our final day covers Montalcino or Montepulciano where we taste more fabulous examples of Sangiovese and witness more incredible terrain.
We will enjoy a light lunch and two visits, and on our return to Siena we will have our final night dinner together.

More about my Tuscany Wine Tour
Tuscany is possibly Italy’s most famous wine region, and it has in recent years undergone a transformation. While the Super Tuscan producers such as Sassicaia have grabbed wine lovers’ imagination with their Mediterranean expression of classic French varietals, Sangiovese, the native grape of the region, is benefitting from improvements in the vineyard and winery that have made the Chianti Classico region one of the most exciting in the world.
Famed for its red wines, Tuscany today has a growing reputation for white wines of great finesse, and our visits will allow us to explore a wide range of styles, and discover what drives the differences between the wines of this surprisingly varied region.
Its original wine producing regions were designated by the Medicis, but in the 19th Century it was Baron Bettino Ricasoli who drove the pre-eminence of Sangiovese, mandating it should be the dominant constituent of wines from Chianti (though also that it should be ‘softened’ with white varieties, a stipulation that remained an appellation requirement until the 1970s).

Today the focus is on ensuing the best grapes make the best wine. Huge effort has gone into identifying clones of Sangiovese and that have wonderful fruit expression and ripe tannins, and in the Chianti Classico region there has been extensive replanting and the introduction of top viticultural practices, producing wines of great elegance and ageing potential.
But Tuscany is not just about Chianti and Sangiovese, the Bolgheri DOC in Maremma is home to the Super Tuscan wines developed in the 1960s, using international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. There is now even a Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC!

However, Sangiovese remains Tuscany’s most iconic variety, and our visits to the regions to the south of Chianti, Montalcino and Montepulciano, will reveal a very different expression of Sangiovese wines, with significantly greater use of oak ageing, resulting in powerful but super smooth wines capable of long ageing.
White wines made from international varieties such as Chardonnay are made alongside Super Tuscan reds, and in San Gimignano the Vernaccia grape variety produces some very high quality wines of great freshness and complexity.
And of course we will be enjoying Vin Santo, the glorious sweet wine made from dried grapes, a perfect complement to the delicious desserts of the region such as castagnaccio (chestnut flour cake) and panforte.

Tucan gastronomy is of course delicious, but the key is simplicity. The freshest produce and local breeds of meat combine to make light salads, hearty stews, and pasta dishes. The olive oil, is, of course, superb.
Most importantly we will enjoy Tuscan hospitality, whether eating at a top restaurant in Siena, enjoying a food pairing tasting at a winery or even a simple spread in an orchard, sampling freshly picked fruits and the local olive oil.

We are staying in Siena, one of the most historic cities of Italy, a major banking hub since the 13th centuries (the Monte dei Paschi bank of more recent fame is based in Siena), and home to superb architecture and artworks.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the Palio horse race still runs in the Piazza del Campo (not during our tours), Siena is a wonderful place to stroll around, with endless opportunities to admire the views, and to enjoy the atmosphere while sipping a glass of wine.

More about Tim Syrad Wine Tours
Since 1997 I have escorted over 150 groups of people on wine tours, visiting more than 40 wine regions in Europe and the New World. My clients keep coming back year after year because in addition to tastings and visits we really do meet the people who make the wine and tend the vines.
I pride myself in offering tours that are informative, imaginative and enjoyable. I keep group sizes manageable so that we spend our time appreciating our visits, not getting on and off the bus or queuing for the loos! I personally escort all of my tours, and I ensure as much as possible of the money my clients pay is spent on great food and wine, and good hotels. I believe you can combine appreciating fabulous wine with relaxation and laughter, which is why so many of my clients come on tour with me every year. More than 100 people have come on at least 10 of my tours.
There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on every tour from the start, and I am proud that many friendships have been made between the people who come on tour with me.
