More about my Cyprus Wine Tour

The third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus was one of the first places where wine was first made, with archaeological evidence from the 4th Century BC. For centuries ‘nama’, which was renamed ‘Commandaria’ at the time of the Crusades was famous throughout Europe, the first choice for monarchs and nobility. Three centuries of Ottoman rule put Cyprus behind other wine producing countries, and it was only in the late 20th Century that the country began to establish a reputation for top quality wine, and we could not be visiting at a better time to experience the excitement among winemakers that their wines are being recognised internationally.

Cyprus has four PGI regional classifications for wine, and seven PDOs (appellations) which have very specific requirements regarding the altitude of vineyards, the yield of grapes harvested and the age of vines. While the Commandaria PDO is the most famous (Commandaria is a sweet, concentrated wine made from raisinated grapes which may or may not be fortified), the others reflect different terroirs and wine styles and showcase the wide variety of wines made in Cyprus today.

While Cyprus’s initial wine rennaissance was driven by plantings of internation varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah, far more focus is now going on native grapes, of which there are many. Mavro is the most widely planted indigenous black grape, and is experiencing a rennaissance in terms of the quality of wines being made from old vines planted at high altitudes. Maratheftiko and Yiannoudi are very much in the ascendant, producing red wines of great complexity and cellaring potential.

Cyprus’s principal white wine grape variety is Xynisteri, which is wonderfully adapted to dry, windy conditions and high altitudes. It responds well to different styles of winemaking and may one day challenge Assyrtiko as the classic grape variety of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Our visits will enable us to engage with the people who are driving Cyprus’s wine reputation forward, who have invested their time, money and considerable expertise in developing some wonderful terroir driven wines. On each visit we will have a chance to talk about the background to the estate, to see the vineyard or winery close up and of course to taste the wines that best demonstrate what is unique and special about the location.

Gastronomy will be a wonderful feature of our tours. Cyrus is home to the cauliflower (!) and possibly halloumi cheese, and our meals will reflect the abundant natural resources of fruit and vegetables, dairy and meat, and of course the sea. On each day of the tour we will enjoy a meal together at a winery or top quality local restaurant, but we will have some evenings free in Limassol to explore local tavernas and drink in the local atmosphere.

We are staying in Limassol, on the south eastern side of the island. A beautiful seaside town, looked over by the Kolossi castle, its museums, parks and hostelries make it a wonderful place to wander around. Our hotel, the Alasia, while not on the sea front, offers an oasis of calm and comfort, with its pool side bar and spa.

More about Tim Syrad Wine Tours

Since 1997 I have escorted over 150 groups of people on wine tours, visiting more than 40 wine regions in Europe and the New World. My clients keep coming back year after year because in addition to tastings and visits we really do meet the people who make the wine and tend the vines.

I pride myself in offering tours that are informative, imaginative and enjoyable. I keep group sizes manageable so that we spend our time appreciating our visits, not getting on and off the bus or queuing for the loos! I personally escort all of my tours, and I ensure as much as possible of the money my clients pay is spent on great food and wine, and good hotels. I believe you can combine appreciating fabulous wine with relaxation and laughter, which is why so many of my clients come on tour with me every year. More than 100 people have come on at least 10 of my tours.

There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on every tour from the start, and I am proud that many friendships have been made between the people who come on tour with me.

For more information about me, my next tours, and previous tours I have run, and to find out what my clients say (some of whom have been coming on tour with me since 2001) please explore the website.
