Outline Itinerary

Day 1
Our tour commences at our meeting point at Lyon airport (see Flight Transfers below). I will meet the afternoon flight arriving from Heathrow, and our coach will take us to Mâcon where we will settle in to the spectacular Hotel Panorama 360, before strolling out into Mâcon for our first night dinner together.

View from Hotel Panorama Sky Bar

Day 2
In the Mâconnais we will visit Pouilly Fuissé, where white wines of great body and structure are made from vines growing under the massive limestone outcrops of Solutré and Vergisson. Further north in the gentler hills of Viré-Clessé, wines display complex tropical aromas combined with great structure and body. We will visit at least two family estates in the region and combine one of the tastings with lunch.

Day 3
Our Beaujolais day will be spent exploring Cru Appellations such as Juliénas, Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie. On these hillsides the Gamay grape ripens slowly to produce wines of great concentration and complexity and even ageing potential with the assistance of some oak maturation.  We will enjoy a tasting lunch, matching wines with local cuisine, together with two visits to wine estates. Evening at leisure in Mâcon.

Day 4
Today we will visit Santenay, at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, and the Côte Chalonnaise. In Mercurey and Rully Pinot Noir flourishes on steeper slopes, and in Montagny to the south where vineyards of Chardonnay share the landscape with limestone quarries.  Some of the best Crémant de Bourgogne comes from this area and will be a focus of one of our visits. A light lunch will enable us to explore these fabulous wines with food, but leave room for our final dinner together on the riverside in Mâcon.

Day 4
Our tour ends but our return flight connection allows us plenty of time to enjoy the lovely town of Mâcon before our coach transfer to Lyon airport after lunch .

More about my Southern Burgundy Wine Tour

My tour to Southern Burgundy will reveal the fantastic quality and value that these regions offer. Lacking the fame of their northern neighbours but sharing much of their geology with frankly more lovely scenery, the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais are home to some superb examples of Burgundian whites and reds, while in Beaujolais it is possible to find the Gamay grape vinified ‘classically’ to produce delicious structured wines that will challenge anyone who thinks Beaujolais = Nouveau.

My focus on every tour I run is on getting to know the region through its people as well as its wine, so we will be visiting a number of family owned estates and meeting the family members responsible for growing the vines and making the wines. However, in Burgundy the négociants, who source wines from growers and have wines from a wide range of appellations, are crucial, and we will benefit from these visits, sampling wines from across the region.

Given we are visiting a region that produces some of the best reds and white wines in the world, not to mention some very good sparkling wine, our food and wine matching experiences will be a highlight. Our lunches on each day of visits will allow us to experience the wines from the area we are visiting with some perfectly matched cuisine, while our first night dinner will introduce us to the wines of the region in an authentic local restaurant.

More about Tim Syrad Wine Tours

Since 1997 I have escorted over 110 groups of people on wine tours, visiting more than 30 wine regions in Europe and the New World. My clients keep coming back year after year because in addition to tastings and visits we really do meet the people who make the wine and tend the vines.

I pride myself in offering tours that are infomative, imaginative and enjoyable.  I keep group sizes manageable so that we spend our time appreciating our visits, not getting on and off the bus or queuing for the loos!  I personally escort all of my tours, and I ensure as much as possible of the money my clients pay is spent on great food and wine, and good hotels.  I believe you can combine appreciating fabulous wine with relaxation and laughter, which is why so many of my clients come on tour with me every year.  More than 70 people have come on at least 10 of my tours.

There is a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on every tour from the start, and I am proud that so many friendships have been made between the people who come on tour with me.

For more information about me, my next tours, and previous tours I have run, and to find out what my clients say (some of whom have been coming on tour with me since 2001) please explore the website.
