Outline Itinerary

Wednesday
Our tour commences at our meeting point at Lyon airport (see Flight Transfers below). I will meet the afternoon flight arriving from Heathrow, and our coach will take us to Mâcon where we will settle in to the spectacular Hotel Panorama 360, before strolling out into the pretty town for our first night dinner.

Thursday
Our day in the Côte Chalonnaise will cover Mercurey to the north, where Pinot Noir flourishes on steeper slopes, and Montagny to the south where vineyards of Chardonnay share the landscape with limestone quarries.  Some of the best Crémant de Bourgogne comes from this area and will be a focus of one of our visits. A tasting lunch will enable us to explore these fabulous wines with food.  On our return to Mâcon the evening is free, for people to enjoy at leisure.

Friday
Our Beaujolais day will be spent exploring Cru Appellations such as Juliénas, Moulin-à-Vent and Fleurie. On these hillsides the Gamay grape ripens slowly to produce wines of great concentration and complexity and even ageing potential with the assistance of some oak maturation.  We will enjoy a tasting lunch, matching wines with local cuisine at one of our visits. Evening at leisure in Mâcon.

Saturday
In the Mâconnais we will visit Pouilly Fuissé where white wines of great body and structure are made from vines growing under the massive limestone outcrops of Solutré and Vergisson. Further north in the gentler hills of Viré-Clessé, wines display complex tropical aromas combined with great structure and body. We will enjoy a comprehensive tasting lunch at our second visit, and on our return to Mâcon we will spend our final evening meeting up with friends we have made, revisiting wines we have enjoyed and eating whatever we have room for!

Sunday
Our tour ends but our return flight connection allows us plenty of time to enjoy the lovely town of Mâcon before our coach transfer to Lyon airport after lunch .

Note: the Itinerary may be changed at Tim Syrad Wine Tours discretion so as to facilitate the smooth running of the tour and to accommodate great opportunities for visits or tastings that may become available.

More about my Southern Burgundy Wine Tour

My tours to Southern Burgundy will reveal the fantastic quality and value that these regions offer. Lacking the fame of their northern neighbours but sharing much of their geology with frankly more lovely scenery, the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais are home to some superb examples of Burgundian whites and reds, while in Beaujolais it is possible to find the Gamay grape vinified ‘classically’ to produce delicious structured wines that will challenge anyone who thinks Beaujolais = Nouveau.

My focus on every tour I run is on getting to know the region through its people as well as its wine, so we will be visiting a number of family owned estates and meeting the family members responsible for growing the vines and making the wines. However, in Burgundy the négociants, who source wines from growers and have wines from a wide range of appellations, are crucial, and we will benefit from these visits, sampling wines from across the region.

Given we are visiting a region that produces some of the best reds and white wines in the world, not to mention some very good sparkling wine, our food and wine matching experiences will be a highlight. Our lunches on each day of visits will allow us to experience the wines from the area we are visiting with some perfectly matched cuisine, while our first night dinner will introduce us to the wines of the region in an authentic local restaurant.

More about Tim Syrad Wine Tours

Since 1997 I have escorted over 100 groups of people on tours to wine regions in Europe and the New World. My clients keep coming back year after year because in addition to tastings and visits we really do meet the people who make the wine and tend the vines.
I personally escort all my tours, and I ensure as much as possible of the money my clients pay is spent on great food and wine, and good hotels.
For more information about me, my next tours, and previous tours I have run, and to find out what my clients say (some of whom have been coming on tour with me since 2001) please explore the website.
